this thing called purpose
this thing called purpose

As I watched the life of Harriet Tubman from my screen that Saturday night I knew without an iota of doubt that this life was more than just living and getting by.

Her life intrigued so much that I began to think about purpose, there was no way this woman wasn’t made for this. She had committed her very existence into it and would rather die than live as a slave.

I was convinced as I watched that evening that this was her purpose. This woman was put on this earth for this reason and she was living it by whatever means necessary.

And it made me ponder about this thing called purpose.

What does purpose means?

According to the dictionary, Purpose is the reason of which something is done or created or for which something exists.

This definition further made me think about the reason why I was created:

What is my existence?

How can I add my own quota to the ongoing development in the world?

What value am i creating ?

One thing I have come to understand is that in discovering your purpose, you must be ready to strip every layer of your former self, giving room to create something new.

I look at the lives of Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and we can all agree that their journey wasn’t an easy one.

Another question that comes to mind is:

Can purpose be one thing or several?

While a lot of people draw their purpose from their career or vocation, I have recently learned that my purpose goes hand in hand with my faith in God.

I have also learnt that fulfilling your purpose does not mean you will die in the process because a lot of people see the fulfilment of purpose as having to be the martyr for something.

While that can happen there are also instances of people who lived long enough after their purpose have been fulfilled, giving room to do other befitting things.

I won’t pretend to have all the answers to all the questions raised in this post but I’m more determined than ever to figure out everything about my purpose.

At the end of it all, I want to die empty knowing that I gave this world everything that God expected of me and just like Paul in the Bible, I want to be able to say

“I have finished my course, I have fought the good fight of faith. (Both Career and Faith wise)
