1. Purpose
To outline the proper method for safely cleaning die heads used in the coating process, ensuring optimal coating quality and preventing contamination.
2. Scope
This SOP applies to all technicians and maintenance personnel authorised to clean die heads on the coating line.
3. Responsibilities
- Technicians: Perform cleaning as instructed.
- Line Operators: Assist with safe removal and reinstallation.
- Maintenance Supervisor: Verify cleanliness and sign off on the inspection log.
4. Required PPE
- Chemical-resistant gloves
- Face shield or goggles
- Apron and sleeves
- ESD-safe footwear
5. Tools and Materials
- Approved cleaning solvent (e.g. acetone or IPA)
- Lint-free wipes
- Soft nylon brush
- Container for solvent soaking
- Sealed waste disposal bag
6. Procedure
6.1 Preparation
- Power off the coating system.
- Wait for the die head to cool (minimum 30 minutes post-operation).
- Don required PPE.
6.2 Disassembly
- Loosen and remove all die head bolts using a torque wrench.
- Carefully detach the die head from the coating assembly.
- Place components on a clean, solvent-safe tray.
6.3 Cleaning
- Remove bulk residue with a lint-free wipe.
- Submerge removable nozzles or plates in cleaning solvent.
- Use a soft brush to clean grooves, edges, and nozzle ports.
- For stubborn buildup, soak parts for 10–15 minutes before re-brushing.
- Rinse with clean solvent and wipe dry.
6.4 Inspection
- Visually inspect for leftover residue or damage.
- Confirm all ports and channels are clear.
- If damaged, tag the component and report to the maintenance lead.
6.5 Reassembly and Documentation
- Reinstall clean components securely.
- Torque bolts to specified settings.
- Record cleaning activity in the maintenance logbook:
- Date
- Time
- Technician ID
- Observations or faults (if any)
7. Safety Notes
- Never use metal brushes or abrasive pads.
- Use solvents in a well-ventilated area.
- Dispose of waste materials in designated containers.
