5 FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE RELOCATING TO A NEW COUNTRY.

Everyone that wants to do better for themselves or their families is always in the search for more – the famously proverbial “greener pastures.

” Most times, the desire to relocate can be linked with the feeling to start over or simply linked with the rewards that come with living a better life in a different country.

The reasons that push people to migrate are many some fancy reasons include great job opportunities, safety or good health services, people often feel the need to go abroad.

But if we’re being honest, the top and major reason that pushes people to leave Africa is to escape poverty.

Poor living conditions, personal needs, education, war and family reunification are some other reasons that cause people to relocate to other countries.

I moved to Italy at the age of fourteen with my siblings to join my mother who had been living in Italy for a long time.

My mother left Nigeria in 1997 and thanks to God and the collective efforts of my both parents, I’ve had the opportunity to learn, explore, develop cultural sensitivity, and speak another language.

There are many difficulties to face when deciding to migrate to a foreign country.

For this reason, I will be sharing essential factors to consider before moving abroad in this post.

These will help you ease the pain and stress that migration brings.

1. BE WELL-INFORMED

Get your facts right! Before moving to another country, you have to get the right information about the place you want to go and live. Make research online.

Ask reliable people for details about the country you want to move to. Don’t allow anyone to delude you.

Some people tend to sugar-coat things by hiding the problems so they can retain their “Yankee” or “Janded” status in your eyes, where they are actually facing problems.

Ask the right people – people that will tell you the truth. Ask information about the immigration policy.

This should be your number one priority.

The worst thing that could happen to you is to be an illegal immigrant and trust me, you don’t want that.

Therefore, you should thoroughly provide yourself with sufficient information about the country you want to settle in.

2. SET UP GOALS AND VALUES

A goal without a plan is just a wish. Everyone that wants to move abroad always has different reasons to want to move.

Setting up plans to achieve those goals helps you stay focused on your purpose. I’ve seen many people come to Italy with brilliant bright goals, ending up without fulfilling any one of them.

They get distracted by things that shift their focus from their goals. There are many things that will try to shift your focus from your goals. It’s up to only you to stay resolute and determined in fulfilling them.

It may take a long time to reach your goals, but stay focused. While you’re at it, obey the laws of the country and respect authority. Immigration is no bed of roses.

You have to work hard while being law-abiding to fulfil your purpose. Always remember who you are and where you’re coming from.

3. LANGUAGE

If you are planning to move abroad, it is important to learn the language of the country.

Living in a country without knowing the language can be challenging – especially when you find yourself facing difficult situations and cannot express yourself correctly in words.

When I see newcomers, particularly Nigerians, saying they only come for the money and have no business in learning the language, it always sounds absurd to me.

How will you make the money if you can’t speak the country’s official language?

Nowadays, companies and work agencies only hire people that can at least speak the basics of the language.

Learning a language as an adult can be very trying. But if you are determined and motivated, you can do it. You have to! Period.

4. CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Embrace diversity! Trust me. Living in a foreign country with a different culture can be challenging.

It can bring on intense sadness and the sense of loneliness. I’ve been there and I know how it feels. And the worst thing you can do is go into your shell in these situations.

A week after I got to Italy, my mom enrolled me and my siblings to school. I felt so lonely because I couldn’t understand the language. My classmates weren’t speaking to me.

No one could understand me except for the English teachers. There were times I went to cry in the bathroom☹. But things gradually changed after I started speaking the language, even though I didn’t become eloquent till much later.

Don’t isolate yourself. Company is good! Find a circle of people that can help – quickly too. To be well integrated, you need to speak with people. Be open-minded.

This will make your social integration easier. Stay positive and be patient with yourself. Furthermore, you need to embrace the new culture and etiquette of the country.

For example, in Italy, it is rude to wear hats indoors. In Nigeria, it is disrespectful to give an item to an older person with your left hand. You have to learn to be aware of where you are and try not to be disrespectful to traditions.

Culture is important. And you’ll be a better versed, versatile person when you leave yourself open to learning how to be culturally diverse!

5. GIVE YOURSELF TIME

Relocating overseas is a big challenge that changes one’s life. It could mean starting over for many.

You need to equally give yourself time. Go easy on you. There will always be moments of anxiety and stress. Those are the moments you have to be extra kind on yourself.

You’re doing amazing! With time, you will learn to have more patience to face them. Don’t ever stop trying.

Also very important; don’t be afraid to ask for help. Wise people ask questions. That’s how you remain strong! I hope you’ve enjoyed this post!
