THINGS NO ONE TELL YOU ABOUT GROWING YOUR BLOG

The desire for your blog to grow and eventually seeing it expand is a cool feeling but nobody tells you about the amount of work required.

You’ve probably noticed that I’ve been MIA for the past week or so. That’s because it’s not just enough to have a blog you have to do the work of researching and curating quality content on it

I’ve spent the majority of the last couple of days stressing, pulling my hair out, researching on relevant topics and content that will create engagement on the blog and also making plans for the coming year.

Let me tell you… blogging is super fun and fulfilling. It can also get so difficult to keep up though, especially when you’re also working full-time and there are tendencies to burn out.

Here are a few things no one tells you about blogging

YOU WILL DOUBT YOURSELF

This is one of the things you will deal with as your blog grows and one that I have struggled with a couple of times. I have written a couple of post were i wondered if people would even read and then it turns out well, I have written posts that never saw the publishing light and then there are posts that have just go really bad. And for all of these posts, I doubted myself, would people read the post, will they engage with it…

Of course, those feelings come and often go away pretty quickly, but it’s important to note that they’re there. This blog started as a small space, just for me. Now, when I think of YM, I think of it as a space where everyone can come and be themselves. So, naturally, when I write, I do so with my readers in mind. I happen to think that it’s a good thing, but the truth is, growing your blog can be a bit intimidating, too.

GROWING YOUR BLOG: GUILT + OVERWHELM

I can’t even express the guilt that I’ve felt over the last couple of days. Not being able to post anything, the constant worry that i’m failing and not living up to expectation and that feeling is quite shitty.

That guilt and overwhelm is almost ever-present, once your blog starts to grow and your audience expands.

ANXIETY

Here’s a list of few things that often keep me up at night:

-fear of misspelling a word within the post, or any form of typographical error

-not having enough time to respond to comments

-not being able to respond to all emails right away

These all seem like small, silly things, but to me, they’re important. Okay, so the spelling/grammar thing can get a bit crazy at times;

Also, typos happen. I don’t religiously proof-read every single post I write and even sometimes when i do, my eyes still omit some words. At times, when I write, I’m so excited that I publish almost immediately before I even get a chance to thoroughly read through it a couple of times.

I sometimes get comments saying things like “Enjoyed reading this post, but I did notice at least three grammatical errors and two words were misspelled, maybe you should pay more attention when you write or get someone to proofread for you before posting“. Comments like these make me think that perhaps, I should take myself a bit more seriously. But where’s the fun in that? This is, after all, just a blog. And imperfections are always welcomed here.

The last couple of days made me realize just how much this blog means to me. Blogging has become such a huge part of my life and if I’m being honest, I can’t wait to experience all the joys that comes with it.

And yes, growing your blog is fun, but it’s also A LOT of work and as your blog grows, there’s more and more work that needs to get done.

I can totally relate. Writing in English is not as easy as writing in Italian for me. But I love and prefer writing my posts in English.
Blogging is fun, but it is not an easy job. Sometimes it can be harder than your job.
There are times I don’t even know what to write about.
My advise for you is to continue doing what you do. And never relent.
Try engaging with other bloggers too. And kindly tell them to check out your posts too.
Blogging is competitive. But always remember the reason you started it.
